It’s a delight each year to visit the New World Festival of the Arts in downtown Manteo, NC. Paintings, jewelry, sculpture of glass, wood and metal, and pottery to name a few of the treasures found along the
waterfront.
One of my favorite is the work of Martha Johnson who creates images of mixed media, fabric, paper, stamps, tied together more often than not with quotes and other words to live by. I purchased two little framed pieces for a couple of friends. You can see Martha’s work at the Front Porch Cafe.
Manteo has changed a lot since I lived there in 1979. The downtown area has transformed into a walking, shopping and dining village along an active marina and next to Festival Park , the Outer Banks History Center and the replica of the Elizabeth II. Please make sure you visit Manteo on your next trip to the Outer Banks.

It’s a Mayberry kind of 4th of July in downtown Mante! The sun is shining, the wind is blowing gently from the east and the sky is Carolina Blue!
There are a lot of people in town for the holiday; they’re browsing the Farmers’ Market and listening to the live music at center stage beneath the old Courthouse.
Marshes Light Marina welcomes the Chesapeake Cruisers, and everyone, including their boats, is decked out in red, white and blue finery. They’re cooking out under the tent and strolling the Marshes Light boardwalk over to Manteo to shop and dine and see the sights.

A beautiful weekend at Marshes Light was enjoyed recently by some folks staying in one of our three bedroom marina villas (pictured right).
Beautiful weather presented a great opportunity for a kayak trip and a trip to the nearby beaches of the Outer Banks.

Bird watching and enjoying all the sights of Manteo, including the Elizabeth II, Festival Park and Marshes Light, from the water were great fun!

This is the second year we’ve had a new resident living in the grapevine above the front door of the Marshes Light Model Home on Fernando Street.
Does anyone know what type of bird she is? She wasn’t frightened when I opened the door to take her picture and she didn’t fly away.
We are looking forward to more new residents at Marshes Light as four

recent homesite sales will result with at least one new home under construction estimated to begin within 60 days!
Here’s another photo of our new feather’d friend.

The Manteo Homecoming Parade was held last Saturday. Shown here is the Manteo High School marching band.
Coming up on November 6 at 8 p.m. at the Sea Ranch on the Beach Road in Kill Devil Hills is a concert featuring the Statesmen of Jazz. Find out why legends like Charlie Byrd, Herbie Hancock, Dizzie Gillespie, Etta James and Les Paul chose to perform, record and tour with the musicians honored by this non-profit network. This is a benefit to establish a need-based music lessons fund hosted by The Carolinian Studio. For more information, call 252-473-7154. Make it an evening with dinner at The Pearl – oceanfront dining with a French flair.
Finally, here’s a photo of a recent visitor to Marshes Light, meet Diesel an English bulldog puppy and landscape mascot.

After a week of HOT humid weather, a much welcome northeaster has blown in, dropping temperatures and bringing some rain.
It’s a quiet afternoon in Marshes Light, perfect for sitting in a rocking chair on the front porch with a good book or magazine – I was just looking at the Paula Deen’s magazine, trying to find inspiration for dinner tonight. Shrimp & Grits or Linguine with Clam Sauce? Hmmm…
This weather just feels good, bringing a change of seasons and my favorite time of year on the Outer Banks.
