The Beach Road to Manteo Begins in Chicahauk

March 6, 2010

Chicahauk is located in Southern Shores, NC. Planned in the mid-70’s by Kitty Hawk Land Company, the homesites and roads were laid out to follow the contours of the land and to preserve vegetation as much as possible. It’s one of the very few ocean communities where you’ll find large (over an acre in some areas) homesites. Almost 25 years later, I’m still proud to live in Chicahauk.

February 20, 2010

I can feel it in the air: sunshine, birds chirping, and longer days are heralding the coming of Spring. I walked around town yesterday and took a couple of photos.  That sweet puppy breath you smell is coming from Sam, resident watchdog at John Silver’s Art Gallery, downtown Manteo.

Eat Some Oysters, then Help Bag those Shells

February 10, 2010

NAGS HEAD –Volunteers are invited to help bag recycled oyster shells that will be used in an ongoing shoreline restoration project at Jockey’s Ridge State Park. The bagging will take place Saturday, Feb. 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Jockey’s Ridge visitors’ center during the annual George Barnes Valentine’s Day Oyster Reef and Roast.

The roast is hosted by the Friends of Jockey’s Ridge State Park. The park is working with the N.C. Coastal Federation to restore portions of its eroding estuarine shoreline. Part of the restoration includes building an oyster sill, using recycled oyster shells. The sill will protect the shoreline from waves until planted marsh grasses mature and stabilize the shoreline.

This is the second phase of the project. A grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Southeast Aquatic Resources Partnership is paying for the work.

To volunteer or for more information, contact Justin Barnes at Jockey’s Ridge at 252-441-7132 or visit http://nccoast.org/Newsroom/press-releases/2010/Jockeys-ridge-bagging-020510.pdf.

Marshes Light and a Word about the Developer

January 25, 2010

For a real estate development company, our roots are deep.

Kitty Hawk Land Company started in the late 1940’s with the development of a large tract of land in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Ownership of the company switched hands, and in 1985, Kitty Hawk Land Company became a subsidiary of Boddie-Noell Enterprises (BNE), a diversified, family-owned company located in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

BNE, through Kitty Hawk Land Company, created The Currituck Club, a premiere residential golf course community in Corolla, NC, as well as a number of smaller desirable neighborhoods along the Outer Banks. Today, BNE’s new communities can be found at Arlington Place (near New Bern, NC), Marshes Light (historic Manteo, NC) and Viniterra (Williamsburg, VA).

BNE started business back in 1962 and is now the largest privately held franchise operator of Hardee’s restaurants. Our other restaurant holdings include: Café Carolina, Moe’s Southwest Grill, Texas Steakhouse, and The Highway Diner.

Wait, there’s more. When BNE is not creating enviable and sustainable communities or serving up great food in their restaurants, the beautifully restored 18th century manor home, Rose Hill Conference Center, is an elegant location to host corporate events and fundraisers, parties and weddings.

From Boddie-Noell’s website, their message is clear.

“BNE is a dynamic, modern and diverse company that adheres to good old-fashioned family values. Every person on our team is just that, a person, deserving of respect and constant positive reinforcement. So we work hard to foster a friendly work environment, where every member of the BNE family has the opportunity to grow and succeed.”

“We’re a family business—a second-generation family business, in fact, with an unbreakable commitment to each other. “

And I am extremely pleased to share BNE’s history and success as I celebrate my 25th anniversary with Boddie-Noell this year.

Poor Richard’s is Open Again in Manteo!

January 19, 2010

One of my favorite restaurants is open again – Poor Richard’s on the waterfront in downtown Manteo. They closed for a couple of weeks to make some repairs and refinish the floors. Lunch was delish as usual and there were people sitting outside on the deck enjoying the sunny 68 degree weather.

Took these photos of the George Washington Creef Boathouse and the Maritime Museum on my walk back to the Marshes Light Sales Center today. I love being able to walk downtown for lunch or to browse the shops and festivities!

Ducks in Duck

December 29, 2009

A beautiful crisp morning in the duck blind often finds my husband with camera in hand, rather than a shotgun.

This view is facing east from the Currituck Sound near Sanderling in Duck.

The colder weather, the better, that’s when the ducks get up and move. Life on the Outer Banks brings you close to living off the land and sea.

The View from Marshes Light in Historic Downtown Manteo

December 9, 2009

IT’S BEEN AN INTERESTING YEAR.

In spite of the recession and sluggish real estate market, the Marshes Light community continues to grow, In 2009 we welcomed four new Marina Villa owners and four new homesite owners. We have three full-time residents in the Marina Villas; and there’s a rumor that there may be a single family home under construction in 2010. Architects from Raleigh, NC, are working on the Marina Villa plans for building 15. This building will be parallel to the marina basin and each villa will have incredible sound views facing east. Depending on permits, we hope to begin a pre-sale program soon and start construction shortly thereafter. Currently, there are four three-bedroom villas available for sale (one in the Azalea, three in the Bayberry; prices start at $446,250).

We’ve launched a new marketing program for the Marina and recently attended the Annapolis Boat Show. The weather was awful, but that didn’t deter the crowds. We will be attending a “Trawlerfest” in Fort Lauderdale in January and the Miami Boat Show in February to promote the Marina. As part of our promotion, we are giving away two weeks complimentary dockage, electricity charged separately. We plan to start construction of the Ship’s Store soon in order to be open for the Summer season.

If you would like more information about the Marina and available boat slips, please contact Lee Whitley or Ann Davis at 252-475-9863.

Spotlight on Marshes Light Model Home: Reclaimed Antique Heart Pine Floors

November 24, 2009

Located on stately Fernando Street, leading into downtown Manteo, the Coors home was built as a showcase home for Marshes Light. It therefore has all the “bells and whistles” one would expect in a model home. There are numerous architectural details designed to fit the “Manteo Way of Building,”* but the spotlight in this post is on the floors.

Throughout the first floor and the stairs leading up to the second floor, are random-width, reclaimed heart pine boards that have been salvaged from old factories, warehouses and other old buildings throughout the East and Southeast. The individual boards were carefully selected and installed by local craftsmen. Because the wood was originally sawn from old-growth forests, antique heart pine typically contains more heartwood with tighter vertical grain structure and fewer knots than newly sawn examples. This is the wood that helped shape America’s towns and countrysides. The antique heart pine’s classic rich orange, amber and pumpkin hues are complemented by occasional nail holes, wormholes, saw kerfs and watermarks to create a gorgeous one-of-a-kind floor. The floors in the Coors home have a rustic character and are softly polished to a deep amber glow.

The Coors home is available for sale, for more information visit: www.marsheslight.com.

* “The Manteo Way of Building: A Guide for Development” is set of guidelines that will allow for change in Manteo over the next 20 years while maintaining its present character. These guidelines augment the zoning ordinance by providing additional detail for project review. Visit www.townofmanteo.com for more information. The guidelines are set to preserve architectural style and influence neighborhood design.

Manteo & Marshes Light Neighborhood Waterfront

November 16, 2009
These photos were taken by local Manteo artist and friend, George Cheeseman. I think they were taken early last week (Nov. 8, 2009).

This first photo shows a popular spot along the Marshes Light boardwalk, it needs a better name; I call it the “Corner.” It’s a great spot to sit and enjoy the view and there are stairs nearby to get down to the water’s edge, suitable to launch a kayak or canoe or throwing a stick for your dog.

Nor Ida and the Outer Banks

November 15, 2009

The Beach Road to Manteo took a bit of a hit in spots along the Outer Banks. Low lying areas in Kitty Hawk and Nags Head took on ocean overwash and several houses in previously eroded areas fell into the sea. Marshes Light in Manteo fared well, as did the majority of the Outer Banks. There were areas around town with standing water.
The area south of Oregon Inlet along Highway 12 has been closed due to major overwash at the “S Turns” as the asphalt was compromised. The famous house that was featured in the movie “Nights in Rodanthe” still stands, however it is surrounded by the ocean.
The storm was a combination of a low pressure system and the remnants of Hurricane Ida. Damage continued to occur after the storm passed due to high tides battering already lost sand dunes.
Here in Southern Shores, there was little to no damage, but there are an abundant of leaves and twigs in my yard and swimming pool. Time for a date with my rake!

Free Golf

October 29, 2009

Did I say free golf?

Now, for a limited time, our “sister community,” Viniterra in New Kent County, Virginia, is offering free golf on their brand new Rees Jones designed golf course. I recently toured the golf course and it is very inviting with beautiful Fall foliage, rolling fairways and cart paths meandering through portions of mature, deciduous forest.

According to Rees Jones’ website, ponds were created to provide both strategic and aesthetic value. Multiple tee angles, combined with the thoughtful and strategic location of a variety of grass, sand and water hazards, assure an enjoyable experience for all skill levels.

After your game, you must stop by the New Kent Winery and enjoy a tour and wine tasting. The building is unique and unlike any winery you will ever visit. The structure is built from various recycled materials ranging from pre-civil war bricks to cypress and heart-pine reclaimed from buildings well over a century old. All wine making, storing and bottling are done on site.

While the Winery is breathtaking, the wine tasting will delight your senses – the 2006 Chardonnay Reserve and the Meritage are popular sellers. There’s also a 2005 Merlot, 2008 Vidal Blanc, and a unique White Norton available for purchase.

Taste them all and let me know your favorite! And, when you visit, tell ‘em you heard about it on The Beach Road to Manteo!

SEA FOOD, EAT IT!

October 22, 2009

Fall on the Outer Banks – The nights are cool, the days are warm and the fish are running! I am not a fisher-woman, but do enjoy the freshest seafood available.

Here’s a great and easy recipe that I made recently – it was perfect and included fresh local seafood purchased from Carawan’s in Kitty Hawk.
I followed a recipe in which you saute the clams (shell and all, no need to pop them open) in olive oil with minced garlic. It was very easy and produced a very tasty dinner. Here’s the rest of the recipe with my embellishments, courtesy of Mario Batali from Epicurious.com.
Ingredients:
12 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
3 1/2 dozen local cherrystone clams (or littleneck clams) scrubbed
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (more if you want it spicier)
1 cup dry white wine
1 (14-ounce) can whole tomatoes tomatoes tomatoes in juice, juice reserved and tomatoes coarsely chopped
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons fresh flat-leaf parsley, coarsely chopped

In large pot over moderately high heat, combine 8 quarts of water to boil and salt. Bring to boil, then add linguine and cook according to package directions (DO NOT OVERCOOK).

Meanwhile, in large sauté pan over moderately high heat, heat 6 tablespoons olive oil until hot but not smoking. Add garlic and sauté until just golden, about 30 seconds. Add clams and 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes and sauté 1 minute. Add wine, tomatoes and juice, and 1/2 cup parsley and simmer, uncovered, just until clams open, 7 to 8 minutes.

Reserve 1/2 cup cooking water, then drain linguine and add to pan. Simmer, tossing occasionally, until linguine is just tender, about 1 minute. If necessary, add some of reserved cooking water to keep moist. Remove from heat. Add remaining 2 tablespoons parsley, 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes, and extra-virgin olive oil, tossing to coat.

Transfer to serving dish and serve immediately with shaved Parmigiano-Reggiano. A tossed salad and warmed french baguette pulls it all together!
