A Few of My Favorite Things: Art & Wine

There are lots of reasons to visit the Outer Banks now: it’s quiet, there are no crowds and there are lots of things to do and see. The beaches are deserted, practically guaranteeing a bounty of shells and sea glass waiting to be found.

Rather than post all the current events here, I highly recommend that you check out www.outerbanks.org. They have a great new look and it’s easy to navigate. The current calendar of events is found here. For art happenings, check out Dare County Arts Council’s stylish new website here.

Off Season usually means discounted rates and local specials.  And to me, that means  WINE. We are fortunate here to have several great wine shops with knowledgeable vintners and incredible selections.

The Wine Specialist in Kitty Hawk is located at Buccaneer‘s Walk (next to Capt’n Franks). Owned and operated by my friend Christine and her husband, Fernando  da Mota, they offer free wine tastings on Wednesday nights from 5 until 8 p.m. It’s a great way to sample new wines before purchasing. My husband especially liked the Highway 12 Cabernet Sauvignon, admiring the ripe aromas of dark berries and soft French oak nuances. I especially like the name.

We recently discovered ½ Price Night at Trio in Kitty Hawk – on Mondays, starting at 5 p.m., all wines by the glass, draft beers and wine station tab cards are 50% off. The wine station is the talk of the OBX. It’s a help-yourself automated station where you can enjoy a taste, half or full glass from a selection of high and medium priced wines. I tried a glass of the Biltmore Viogner 2010 and can heartily recommend it as a well balanced white wine with a smooth finish.

New Construction at Marshes Light

Renaissance Construction recently broke ground for the construction of a three bedroom home in Marshes Light on home site 7. This marks the fourth home in downtown Manteo’s newest neighborhood. Renaissance Construction is owned by Steve Daniels who is the Marshes Light preferred builder.

“I employ the best local craftsmen and personally oversee to be sure each home is well built in a timely and efficient manner.”

There are only a handful of home sites available at Marshes Light, and one or two will boast panoramic views of the Sound. Marshes Light is a unique location connected by a boardwalk to shops, restaurants, theater and Festival Park in downtown Manteo.

December 17. Wright Brothers National Memorial. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The daylong anniversary tribute will be held at the site of Wright’s first flight. UNC Greensboro Amahl and the Night Visitors

Let’s Eat!
December 21. NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island. 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. For ages 8-12. Spend a day learning what it takes to feed our sharks, sting rays, otters, and other residents. Campers will get to observe mealtime in action for some of the animals as they feast. Cost: $25 per camp. Closed toe shoes and a bag lunch required each day.

“Snakes, Gators, & Frogs, Oh My!”
December 29 NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island. 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. For ages 8-12. The Aquarium has so much more to see than just fish. See how many reptiles and amphibians live at the Aquarium and learn about their care and interesting behaviors. Cost: $25 per camp. Closed toe shoes and a bag lunch required each day.

OBX Half Marathon. Check.

The Outer Banks Marathon and related events happened this past weekend, November 11-13. The weather was perfect, sunny with temperatures in the upper 60’s. This was the first time I have ever participated in a big race, and I’m happy to say that I finished the Half Marathon in a little over 2 hours and 20 minutes. The course was incredible providing views of the Sound, and winding along Nags Head Golf Links, over the bridge to Manteo. I drive to Manteo every day to my office at Marshes Light, but running part of that route gives me a whole new perspective.

There were 1,215 runners in the Marathon and 2,757 runners in the Half, and the oldest runner  was 83 years old! In addition to the Marathon held Sunday, on Saturday there were the Outer Banks 8K starting at the First Flight High School track, the Buccaneer 5K and a Fun Run. It was a great family weekend with something for everyone.

The Outer Banks has been a mecca for physical activity ever since the surfboard was first introduced to the natives. Over the years, due to the demand in current trends of recreation, tennis courts, golf courses, health clubs and bike paths have added to the Outer Banks environment.

With a mild Fall and Spring season and a beautiful coastal setting, the Outer Banks is the perfect destination to host a variety of events and competitions. Coming up this Fall (with links for more information) are:

    Outer Banks Boot Camps 2011- Summer Session Round Up

    I’ve spent the past 18 weeks participating in the Outer Banks Boot Camp. It consisted of three 6-week sessions, meeting twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30 a.m., and an “optional” run on Sunday mornings at 6:30. With the exception of one Sunday, I didn’t miss a single day.

    Personally, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done; I lost 10 pounds and dropped my cholesterol level by just over 50 points. I have gained muscle, reduced flab and have increased energy levels. My clothes fit better, and quite a few things are now too big. My confidence has grown and I feel I am part of a very special group of like-minded people. The encouragement from my friends and the rousing threats from the coaches helped me overcome my fears of failure, embarrassment and weakness.

    One day during the first session we ran through side streets to the Avalon Pier, stopping along the way at every STOP sign for 10 push-ups before continuing down to the next STOP sign. I was the last in the group, and I was puffing, panting and really struggling.

    The faster ones in the group – the ones who had already completed this run – came back to get me! They were cheering me on and running with me. They lifted me up and I was able to gather the strength to finish. Fast forward 14 weeks, same route, same run with push-ups and I was in the lead group. This time I was one of the ones who went back to “get” someone. We flanked her side-by-side and together we ran to the end. That’s an incredible feeling of accomplishment!

    Sandbar 5K Run in Kitty Hawk

    Sunday, August 7th, 2011, marked the tenth anniversary of the Sandbar 5K run in Kitty Hawk. This event benefitted the Outer Banks Relief Foundation, whose focus is to help local people in need.  I spoke with Millie Ward, Vice President and Founding Member of the Relief Foundation recently, who said that this event has grown from a 40 person foot race with the finish line being drawn in the sand to a sanctioned run with official timing and over 550 registered runners this year. “This year’s race was our biggest ever, up 100 from last year,” said Millie.

    Team Outer Banks Boot Camp

    Taking place on the beach at Kitty Hawk, 502 men, women and children participated in the race which was a simple, direct route, out and back 3.1 miles. The race occurred at low tide, and the beach was wide and the sand was packed, perfect conditions.

    Sky diving parachutists and the national anthem started the festivities. It was quite a sight! Runners from Texas, Washington (state), New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Ontario, Canada, participated.   There was a strong local showing too, with members of the Outer Banks Boot Camps dominating in their red and gold shirts.

    Spotlight on Mayo Boddie

    I first met Mayo in the fall of 1980 – he was with my father-in-law, H. Wayne Whitley, Jr., of Rocky Mount, on the Outer Banks duck hunting. Several years later, Mayo and his company, Boddie-Noell Enterprises, purchased the company I work for Kitty Hawk Land Company (the original developers of Southern Shores).  That’s been over 25 years ago.

    Mayo is also one of our property owners at Marshes Light. He and his wife, Jean, enjoy their condo here and you can often seem they scooting around town in their little yellow electric car with Maggie, their yellow lab, in the back.

    Mayo’s strong sense of stewardship and preservation are evident in everything he does, from Rose Hill to Hardee’s and real estate developments including The Currituck Club, Marshes Light, Viniterra and Arlington Place.     Outer Banks Boot Camp – Week 6

    They say, “No Pain, No Gain.” After a certain age, though, pain caused by an injury can be a serious setback. I have observed over the past year a couple of friends suffer injuries during the course of their workouts. Just yesterday, a guy in my husband’s bike group had a serious accident and ended up in the hospital with broken ribs, broken clavicle, punctured lung and serious road rash.

    Being new to running, I am mindful of my ability and surroundings. I really don’t want to lose a year or so of the progress I’ve made (from regular kickboxing classes) recuperating from a fall or accident. So, I go slow and steady.

    Today’s boot camp was all about running. We ran to the pier on the beach and back on the pavement. I’m told it was a little over 5 miles. Unfortunately I wore shoes that are meant for the water (they have little holes in the soles to allow the water to drain out). But I ended up running with shoes full of sand, rubbing a big blister on my instep in the process. There’s no comparison to the injuries that others have suffered, but, still, a simple blister was a huge drain on my focus and ability.

    Our instructor, Matt Costa, demonstrated the best way to run. He said “breathe in through your mouth, out through your nose, swing your arms and stretch your legs.” He said to land heel first and roll forward to your toes, eyes on the horizon.  I try to visualize and focus on his words as I run, steady and slow.

    Outer Banks Boot Camp – Week 5

    I woke up to a light drizzle this morning; it was pitch black. No lightning or thunder means Boot Camp is still on. It’s 5:30 a.m., and about 40 of us are in Knuckle-Up’s parking lot, stretching, joking, and wondering what’s in store for us this morning.  Cindy and Brenda are celebrating their 50th birthdays and Rev. Jay (our drill instructor) wishes them well and tells us that 50 is only a number, but it will have special meaning today.

    So, we ran to the beach, then ran up one way and down the next. After that, we did 50 push-ups, then ran back up the beach and did 50 sit-ups. Thank you birthday girls – why couldn’t you be celebrating your 20th birthdays?  

    While this was going on, an obstacle course was being set up with rebar and tape – like a bunch of hurdles a horse would jump over. Our task was to partner with someone and crawl under the hurdles (they were about 18 inches off the ground), then run back through the surf, get back in line to hop over the hurdles, then run back through the surf again, to alternately crawl under and shoulder-roll over the hurdles. My partner, Joy, is a veteran Boot Camper, Squad Leader, and far surpasses my physical abilities. She was game to hang with me even though I didn’t attempt a single shoulder-roll (it’s like a somersault only more explosive and I envisioned ending up with my head in the sand and my butt in the air, legs flapping like a fish out of water.)

    After running up and down the beach a few times, we lined up at the water’s edge linking arms, hands clasped in front. The surf was rolling in around our feet.

     Birthday Girl Cindy was to my left, cute 20-something blonde (definitely not a beginner) was to my right. I worried that I would go under and drag them down with me. We sat down for sit-ups (don’t those two cancel each other out?) and I manage one fairly well. Then the second sit-up came in unannounced with an unwelcome house guest – a good sized wave – and I was thoroughly soaked, losing my grip, and totally shaken. I was ready to bolt, but Cindy, wise, Birthday Girl Cindy, said “together we’re strong.”  And we linked arms again and braved another sit-up in the surf.

    Thank you, wise Birthday Girl Cindy, for not letting me wash away to sea! Today’s bottom line: I am reminded (and humbled by) the incredible encouragement, friendship and remarkable strength of my fellow boot campers.  Thank you Jay,  Dee, Joan,  Cindy, Lorena,  Joy, Diane, Beth, Beverly, Margaret, Victoria, Elaine, Pam, Chrissy, Christine, Michelle, Jason, Tammy, Brenda, Shannon, Nora, Laura, Billy, Matt and Every One for making this a truly, profound experience!

    Coastal Gardening Festival

    May 14. Thomas A.     39th Annual Hang Gliding Spectacular

    May 20 – 23. Jockey’s Ridge State Park and Jockey’s Ridge Crossing, Nags Head. This is the world’s oldest, continuous hang gliding competition. Hang gliding professionals from all over the world come to the Outer Banks to compete and have fun on Jockey’s Ridge State Park.     Jennette’s Pier Grand Opening

    May 21. Fishing, families, and fun. That’s what we can all look forward to with the grand reopening of Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head! The new state-of-the-art, LEED certified, wind-powered, 1,000-foot concrete pier and 16,000 square-foot pier house will be christened and reopened to the public. Originally built in 1939, Jennette’s is the oldest fishing pier on the Outer Banks.     74th Anniversary Season of The Lost Colony

    The Hatteras Kite/SUP Expo

    Outer Banks Sun Rise

    Life can get hectic anywhere; the Outer Banks are no exception. We get caught up with work, kids, school, traffic, and often take where we live for granted.  I was reminded bright and early this morning during day two of Boot Camp that I live in an incredibly beautiful place. I have not been to the beach early in the morning in a long time, but today along with 23 other Boot Camp companions, I enjoyed a beautiful sunrise over the ocean, complete with dolphins and a whale sighting.  After a series of exercises, running, pushups, sit-ups, squats and crawling along in the sand, we all jumped into the ocean! Wow – that will wake you up!

    P.S. If you look out into the ocean, you can just make out the shape of the whale cruising at the surface.

    Boot Camp – Day One – Outer Banks Knuckle Up

    It’s 5:30 a.m., at the parking lot of Knuckle Up in Kitty Hawk. 70+ people stretching on asphalt. We line up and take off running. Orders were to bring  a change of clothes and bottle of water in a backpack.  Backpack and I are not a happy couple. This pack is hell-bent  on  slapping my backside every step of the way. It’s the only backpack I own, a cute little black leather “Prada” I bought from one of those street vendors in New York City. As the mother of three sons, I’m pretty sure I could have found a more appropriate back-happy backpack than the one I brought this morning!

    Anyway, even though I was tempted to leave the “Prada” on the beach a couple of times, I hoisted it above my head and ran through the surf with the rest of my compadres. And what I realized, deep down,  was that my most biggest fear was tripping, falling and dragging the rest of the group down with me.

    23rd Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade

    Today (Sunday, March 20) at 1 p.m. on The Beach Road in Nags Head is the 23rd Annual Kelly’s St. Patrick’s Parade. The parade route starts at about the 10.5 Milepost.  The Theme for 2011 is Celebration of Anniversaries:  Town of Nags Head, 50th Anniversary and Soaring 100-Centennial Celebration of Orville Wright’s 1911 Glider Flight of 9 minutes 45 seconds -a record that stood for just under 10 years, and, of course, my 30th wedding anniversary (don’t think the parade organizers know about that one).

    I’m looking forward to seeing the lovely ladies of Counter Culture Garden Club, the SPCA’s march with their canine companions, classic cars and more.

    Elizbethan Gardens on Roanoke Island presents: Green for Herbs - Learn how to grow, harvest and cook with fresh herbs presented by special guest Chef Jason Smith from the Black Pelican Restaurant, Kitty Hawk.

    The class will concentrate mainly on appetizers. Appetizers include: rosemary skewered bacon wrapped scallops with caramelized onion and sweet thyme sauce, smoked salmon bundles wrapped in chive with lemon caper dill sauce, herb poached mussels and clams with toasted baguette. Chef Jason will be using herbs grown at The Elizabethan Gardens. Assistant Greenhouse Manager, Kathy Crawford will be on hand to give you hints on selecting, growing and purchasing herbs from The Gardens.     My Fitness Choice on the Outer Banks

    My New Year’s Resolutions always consisted of lose a little weight and exercise more. This year was an exception. No resolutions about diet or exercise. N.O.N.E.

    In November 2009, with a little encouragement from a friend, I stepped into the gym at Knuckle Up in Kitty Hawk.  After a few weeks of pain and embarrassment of being the most unfit, oldest, out-of-breath person there, I realized that I looked forward to class. There’s something about strapping on some boxing gloves and working out on a bag that is really satisfying, and it also works up a sweat like I’ve never sweated before. Yes, sweating is good for you, it’s a natural detox and a great barometer of how much you’re putting in/getting out of your workout.

    Instructor Matt Costa may be small of stature – but every inch is made of steel and fierce determination. His bio reads like a convoluted recipe with a dozen ingredients. From the Marine Corps to the Culinary Institute to Knuckle Up, Matt incorporates all of the best of his background and knowledge to excel as kickboxing and motivational trainer.  

    I also recommend the Friday morning class taught by Diane Fisher. She works part-time at Knuckle Up and is also an RN. She has an abundance of energy and brings a different, female perspective to the work-out. For men and women, Diane’s once-a-week Friday class is very popular.

    With a little over a year of kickboxing classes (3 times a week) at Knuckle Up and running on off days, my commitment to fitness is no longer dependent on an annual resolution.

At the time, Kitty Hawk Land Company was the prominent land developer of the Outer Banks, creating enviable communities such as Southern Shores, SeaPines and WatersEdge.

    Diving at Marshes Light Marina

    We’ve been enjoying beautiful sunny weather on the Outer Banks this month, and this past Friday morning was no exception. We recently moved our Marshes Light sales office over to the new ship’s store at the Marina, and I’m getting used to my new digs.  I noticed some unusual activity going on out on the docks; a couple of guys milling about with lines and hoses. One of them was wearing a strange coverall with a rubber hood and scuba mask, the other in jeans and a Nags Head sweatshirt. Our resident boater, Steve, was also nearby, overseeing the event.

    Intrigued, I grabbed my camera and went outside. The coverall guy with hood was a professional diver, hired by Steve to find something boat-related that fell into the brink a while back. He was lowering himself into the water, attached to air tanks on deck by a good length of rope and hoses, and assisted by the Nags Head sweatshirt guy. He had a microphone, so he could converse with the guys on the dock as he explored the shallow depths of the marina basin. I mentioned to him to be on the lookout for vintage glass bottles as Marshes Light was a dairy farm about 100 years ago and there might be some interesing finds buried out in the muck. 

    After a few minutes under water, the diver found what he was looking for and brought it up. Steve was thrilled, but I was a little disappointed that he didn’t find anything more exciting. I wondered how much the diver and assistant cost, compared to the value of the casing that they retrieved.  

    All in all, not a typical Friday at the office; but I sure am liking our new location at the marina!

    UNC Albemarle Ecological Field Site Students Visit Marshes Light

    Professor Robert Perry and students of the Albemarle Ecological Field Site of the University of North Carolina visited the Marshes Light community in Manteo to learn about our wetlands and how to protect them.

    We hosted an informal gathering with Warren Eadus and Andy Deel of Quible Associates P.C., a local Engineering and Environmental Science Firm. The students were then given a guided field review of the stormwater systems at the Marshes Light.

    Andy identified sedimentation as the number one threat to North Carolina’s waterways and went on explain how the sand filters, wet pond, and bioretention basins at Marshes Light reduce the TSS (Total Suspended Solids) below State requirements, while also providing nutrient reductions for stormwater runoff.

    Warren provided a tour of wetlands on site, which are being enhanced to encourage a healthy and diverse growth of native wetland species. Marshes Light is proud to be a part of Historic Manteo and provide state-of-the-art stormwater treatment to protect and promote healthy water quality throughout beautiful Shallowbag Bay.
