Outer Banks Sun Rise

April 21, 2011

Life can get hectic anywhere; the Outer Banks are no exception. We get caught up with work, kids, school, traffic, and often take where we live for granted.  I was reminded bright and early this morning during day two of Boot Camp that I live in an incredibly beautiful place. I have not been to the beach early in the morning in a long time, but today along with 23 other Boot Camp companions, I enjoyed a beautiful sunrise over the ocean, complete with dolphins and a whale sighting.  After a series of exercises, running, pushups, sit-ups, squats and crawling along in the sand, we all jumped into the ocean! Wow – that will wake you up!

P.S. If you look out into the ocean, you can just make out the shape of the whale cruising at the surface.

Boot Camp – Day One – Outer Banks Knuckle Up

April 19, 2011

It’s 5:30 a.m., at the parking lot of Knuckle Up in Kitty Hawk. 70+ people stretching on asphalt. We line up and take off running. Orders were to bring  a change of clothes and bottle of water in a backpack.  Backpack and I are not a happy couple. This pack is hell-bent  on  slapping my backside every step of the way. It’s the only backpack I own, a cute little black leather “Prada” I bought from one of those street vendors in New York City. As the mother of three sons, I’m pretty sure I could have found a more appropriate back-happy backpack than the one I brought this morning!

Anyway, even though I was tempted to leave the “Prada” on the beach a couple of times, I hoisted it above my head and ran through the surf with the rest of my compadres. And what I realized, deep down,  was that my most biggest fear was tripping, falling and dragging the rest of the group down with me.

Coors Cottage Transformed to Discover Marshes Light Get-Away

April 14, 2011

We’re in the process of outfitting our beloved Coors Cottage to be our new guest accommodations for Marshes Light. Previously, our guests enjoyed staying at the Marina Villas, in a three bedroom condominium. As a matter of fact, the last guests who stayed there, fell in love and immediately purchased it – hence the move.

Check out these adorable dishes that Mrs. C found in Hilton Head. They’ll work well with the white dishes and mugs I found at a local store.

The Coors Cottage will bring a new dimension to a visit at Marshes Light. A 2009 Parade of Homes winner, the Coors Cottage blends historical detail and craftsmanship of the past with an upscale, gourmet kitchen and an open and inviting floor plan.

How about a soak in the tub after a full day?

Located on stately Fernando Street, the Coors Cottage is just a short walk to downtown Manteo and quaint shops, restaurants, and Festival Park.

Boot Camp

April 5, 2011

Even though I’ve never been particularly athletic, I’ve always been active. Blessed with an obliging metabolism, I’ve been able to muster the energy for regular, albeit half-hearted, periods of physical fitness most of my early adulthood.

Upon turning 40, however, my metabolism declared a four day work week. Upon turning 50, she packed her bags and headed for the hills.

In an effort to woo Miss Metabolism back to work, I joined Knuckle-Up Fitness in Kitty Hawk. The sculpted, healthy bodies I encountered there kicking and punching to loud heavy hip-hop rock music were just the right tonic to jumpstart the sluggish Miss M to attention.

Now after a year and a half, I’m ready for the next step – BOOT CAMP  (beginners) and it starts April 19. I’m going to chronicle my efforts here.

Time for Lunch

March 22, 2011

When there’s a special occassion, or I’m just plain sick and tired of leftovers or frozen microwavable meals, there are some great local eateries to choose from in Manteo.

One of my all time favorite places in Poor Richard’s on the waterfront in downtown Manteo. The place is casual, the views are great and the food is fresh. Order at the counter and find a seat inside or out. If it’s not listed on the menu, chances are they can make it for you. http://www.poorrichardsmanteo.com/. 252-473-3333.

We recently tried the new Harbor Point Bar and Grill  at Shallowbag Bay. This is a new restaurant that took over the space once occupied by Striper’s. The view was outstanding and the food delicious. I enjoyed a turkey/bacon wrap with fresh home-made chips and salsa. 252-473-3222.

Another favorite place is Ortegaz Southwestern Grill and Wine Bar. The service is always great, and the food is served with a fresh spin and a nod to the flavors of the southwest. Their fish tacos are delightful. http://www.ortegaz.com/index.html.

23rd Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade

March 20, 2011

Today (Sunday, March 20) at 1 p.m. on The Beach Road in Nags Head is the 23rd Annual Kelly’s St. Patrick’s Parade. The parade route starts at about the 10.5 Milepost.  The Theme for 2011 is Celebration of Anniversaries:  Town of Nags Head, 50th Anniversary and Soaring 100-Centennial Celebration of Orville Wright’s 1911 Glider Flight of 9 minutes 45 seconds -a record that stood for just under 10 years, and, of course, my 30th wedding anniversary (don’t think the parade organizers know about that one).

I’m looking forward to seeing the lovely ladies of Counter Culture Garden Club, the SPCA’s march with their canine companions, classic cars and more.

Imagine

March 9, 2011

Could you imagine yourself living here? How about waking up each morning with the sun rising over the Atlantic Ocean nearby? Perhaps, after a cup of coffee and a bite to eat, you put your kayak in the water and paddle around Festival Park, maybe take a fishing rod, but most definitely a camera. That might be the most you do in a day, or maybe you would meet some friends for lunch at a local restaurant that’s just a short walk away via the sound-side boardwalk. If your days are leisurely, perhaps you’d want to take a pottery class next door at the college.

Could you imagine yourself boating here and mooring up for a week? Staying in a destination marina and exploring a charming historic town on foot. There’s a history center, mariner’s museum, outdoor theater, summer farmer’s market and “First Friday” street festivals. There are plenty of locally owned restaurants serving fresh food and fresh caught seafood daily. Maybe rent bicycles or don your running shoes and hit the miles-long bike and jogging path that run the length of the island.

Imagine.

This is a percolating time of year along the Outer Banks; it’s not coffee yet, but it’s brewing. We are on the threshold of Spring and up and down the beach businesses are getting ready for the season. It’s also a great time of year to enjoy specials hosted by local shops, such as the wine tasting I visited last night at The Wine Specialist  (Milepost 4.5 on the Bypass in Kitty Hawk).

Wine specialist Stacey Walters of Tryon Distributing, showcased wines from La Posta Vineyards in Argentina. We enjoyed sampling a white wine, Blanco de Blancos, 2009, which was a blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Torrontes. It was crisp and light and will be delicious on a warm summer evening. I also tried a smooth Malbec, 2008, a dark ruby colored wine that is full bodied, balanced, and very fruit forward which I purchased (about $15.00). A reviewer of Malbec wines from the New York Times states: “They were consistent, generally unchallenging and crowd-pleasing. In short, what’s not to like?”

The Great Customer Courtship

Banks Are Rolling Out New Incentives to Win Your Business. Here’s a Guide

Banks “need more cash on hand,” says Dan Geller, executive vice president at Market Rates Insight Inc., a San Anselmo, Calif., firm that tracks bank interest-rate data, “so they are intent on bringing in warm bodies.”

The current low-interest-rate environment is adding to banks’ sense of urgency. By bringing in customers now, banks are setting themselves up to profit when interest rates rise, by collecting the difference between the interest paid to depositors and the money they rake in from loans.

My Fitness Choice on the Outer Banks

February 2, 2011

My New Year’s Resolutions always consisted of lose a little weight and exercise more. This year was an exception. No resolutions about diet or exercise. N.O.N.E.

In November 2009, with a little encouragement from a friend, I stepped into the gym at Knuckle Up in Kitty Hawk.  After a few weeks of pain and embarrassment of being the most unfit, oldest, out-of-breath person there, I realized that I looked forward to class. There’s something about strapping on some boxing gloves and working out on a bag that is really satisfying, and it also works up a sweat like I’ve never sweated before. Yes, sweating is good for you, it’s a natural detox and a great barometer of how much you’re putting in/getting out of your workout.

Instructor Matt Costa may be small of stature – but every inch is made of steel and fierce determination. His bio reads like a convoluted recipe with a dozen ingredients. From the Marine Corps to the Culinary Institute to Knuckle Up, Matt incorporates all of the best of his background and knowledge to excel as kickboxing and motivational trainer.

I also recommend the Friday morning class taught by Diane Fisher. She works part-time at Knuckle Up and is also an RN. She has an abundance of energy and brings a different, female perspective to the work-out. For men and women, Diane’s once-a-week Friday class is very popular.

With a little over a year of kickboxing classes (3 times a week) at Knuckle Up and running on off days, my commitment to fitness is no longer dependent on an annual resolution.

A Little Local Trivia

January 28, 2011

Marshes Light is a new home marina community located in the heart of Manteo, North Carolina.

Manteo is located on Roanoke Island, surrounded by the waters of the Roanoke Sound, and just west of Nags Head on the Outer Banks.

Manteo is a few miles or so from:

From almost anywhere in Marshes Light, it is only a five minute walk along a scenic waterfront boardwalk to downtown Manteo, with fine-dining restaurants and casual eateries, bookstores, shops and galleries.

A little further along the boardwalk and over a wooden bridge is Roanoke Island Festival Park with an outdoor auditorium hosting concerts (in season), a maritime museum, and a replica of Sir Walter Raleigh’s brigantine that brought 110 British colonists to the Outer Banks in 1587. Manteo hosts First Friday Festivals and summertime Farmers Markets.

Marshes Light has a selection of home sites and condominiums for sale. There’s also a marina offering boat slips for sale or lease, slips will accommodate boats up to 60’ in length. While the Marina does not yet have fuel, there is power, water, pump-out service and restrooms and laundry facilities for boaters.

Please visit this blog often for updates and things to do throughout the year. For more information about Marshes Light, visit www.marsheslight.com.

BNE Land & Development

January 10, 2011

In 1985 Kitty Hawk Land Company was purchased by BNE Land & Development, a subsidiary of Boddie-Noell Enterprises of Rocky Mount, NC. At the time, Kitty Hawk Land Company was the prominent land developer of the Outer Banks, creating enviable communities such as Southern Shores, SeaPines and WatersEdge.

Kitty Hawk Land Company with the backing of Boddie-Noell went on to develop The Currituck Club on the northern Outer Banks, Arlington Place in southeastern NC, Viniterra in New Kent, VA, and Marshes Light in Manteo.

I’ve known these people for well over 25 years and I’m proud to be a part of the BNE family! (Pictured above from left: David Powell (deceased), Nancy Knight, Doug Anderson, Judy Shaw, and Donna Reynolds.

Vision and Values:

BNE is a dynamic, modern and diverse company that adheres to good old-fashioned family values. Every person on our team is just that, a person, deserving of respect and constant positive reinforcement. So we work hard to foster a friendly work environment, where every member of the BNE family has the opportunity to grow and succeed.

We are a dynamic and diversified company in the restaurant and real estate development business:

  • Based on family values
  • Operated by the best people in the industry
  • Focused on serving the ever-changing needs of our customers
  • Enjoying every aspect of our success

Our six core values are evident in everything we do:

•RESPECT for individuals, communities and our environment.
•HONESTY at all times, regardless of circumstances and without fear of retribution.
•TRUST in others and ourselves. We fulfill our commitments and treat mistakes as an opportunity to learn and grow.
•EXCELLENCE in all we do, exceeding the expected and continuing to improve.
•TEAMWORK, or enthusiastically working together to accomplish more, together.
•DIVERSITY, to value each person’s unique ability to contribute. The strongest team is the one that recognizes individual talents and strengths among team members.

The Rock Fish are Running!

January 6, 2011

A 63 pound striped bass (aka rock fish) was landed recently by a father and son team fishing aboard the Rigged Up out of Oregon Inlet Fishing Center on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  Congratulations to Captain Haywood on and his fishing party.

The largest striped bass ever caught by angling was a 35.6 kg (78.5 lb) specimen taken in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on September 21, 1982. The record-holder is Albert McReynolds, who fought the fish from the beach for an hour and twenty-minutes before landing it in the surf.

www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Striped_bass.

While the Atlantic striped bass is the state fish of Maryland, Rhode Island and South Carolina, it’s easily the fish of choice during the winter on the Outer Banks.

Also known as rock fish, or ocean rock, these fish migrate between fresh and salt water; and its during the colder months when the rockfish show up along the Outer Banks that makes prime fishing time.

Ocean rockfish is definitely the best fish I’ve ever tasted. If you’re planning a trip to the Outer Banks soon, check in with any of the local fish stores, such as Carawan’s in Kitty Hawk, and ask if they have fresh ocean rockfish or striped bass. Get them to filet one for you, take it home, rub it with olive oil, salt and pepper and grill about 5-7 minutes on each side. If unable to grill outdoors, fish can be broiled 4-5 minutes from heat, turning once, 10 to 12 minutes total.

The Blue Moon Beach Grill Reviewed

December 22, 2010

I have heard many great things about the Blue Moon Beach Grill. Located at Surfside Plaza in Nags Head, the BMBG is located in a strip mall that lays between the Beach Road and the Bypass at about the 13 Milepost. It’s small which in my experience usually equates with excellence. (http://http://www.bluemoonbeachgrill.com/.)

I met several friends for lunch recently. We were seated at a table right away. The last time I attempted lunch at the BMBG was in early summer and we were turned away as there was a 30 minute wait. My anticipation was palatable. The thing about strip malls, though, is the front door. You enter right off the sidewalk/parking lot. In this case the front door also opened from the north and the north wind. None of us could take our coats off, and you got a blast of arctic air every time the door opened. Which happened a lot.

After examining the menu, I decided on a Caesar salad with fried oysters. A sign on the wall proclaims Outer Banks Catch, a local nonprofit program that promotes and encourages support and consumption of local seafood. (http://http://www.outerbankscatch.com/.)  And our local oysters have been superb this season and these were no exception. These were perfectly fried, delicately salty and crunchy.

In the 1930s, Caesar Salad was voted by the master chefs of the International Society of Epicures in Paris as the “greatest recipe to originate from the Americas in fifty years.” (http://whatscookingamerica.net/History/SaladHistory.htm.) The formula for a perfect Caesar is pretty much the same and makes it a great winter salad: fresh romaine lettuce and croutons dressed with parmesan cheese, lemon juice, olive oil with garlic and anchovies. The version I had at the Blue Moon included grape tomatoes, sautéed onions and diced bacon. I like the inner crisp leaves of the romaine, the fresher the better. My salad consisted of the outer end leaves that tend to wilt in a dressing. The onions added an interesting visual dimension, but ultimately overpowered the salad. There were no croutons – possibly due to the fried oysters. I was disappointed in the salad, but the good news is that there were maybe six or seven of those delectable fried oysters served on top of the salad and that was just right.

The Other Manteo

December 17, 2010

I use a couple of search engines and apps to find information to share with you in this blog including WhosTalking.com and several Google alerts (Outer_Banks, Roanoke_Island, Manteo) that send posts with those names mentioned to my In Box.

Which led me to an article in BClocalnews.com. Written by Jennifer Schell for the Kelowna Capital News, the article lists her “Favourite Things to Share this Holiday Season,” and in which I discovered the other Manteo, a resort in Canada. Kelowna is located in the middle of British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley and lays approximately midway between Vancouver and Calgary. Pretty far from Outer Bank’s Manteo.

Let’s see what Kelownan’s want under their Christmas tree:

  • Homemade crackers at Discover Wines or Okanagan Grocery
  • A gift certificate to Wine Plus+ Wine School
  • A Thermomix. Just rated the No. 1 foodie gift on the Food Network
  • Sea to Sky Seasoning, mini flavoured salts, tins of luscious Fanny Bay Smoked Oysters, smoked salmon, Maldon Sea Salt from Codfather’s Seafood Market
  • Monika’s coveted Christmas cookie boxes at Okanagan Grocery
  • Moni’s Nuttier Than A Fruitcakes
  • Wine
  • Cheese, Carmelis Goat Cheese and Gort’s Gouda
  • Jars of grilled artichokes, olives and other Italian delights.
  • Simply the freshest, best olive oil (and red wine vinegar) from the Olive Oil Merchant—online store offers fast, free delivery in Kelowna (free delivery for olive oil? Wow!)
  • Beautiful chocolates and chocolate bars from Sandrine Pastry & Chocolate and great Christmas breakfast Ideas and quiche
  • Chef Rod Butters of Raudz Regional Table now has his personal line of preserves for sale. Drunken Cherries, homemade pickles and more
  • Chef Bernard’s, Wild Apple Restaurant at Manteo, Blackberry Basil Jam or Star Anise Marinade for your gift basket
  • Summerhill has the perfect bubbles (including the Cipes Gabriel that won Best International Sparkling wine recently) and decadent Icewine chocolates
  • Broken Barrel Furniture Company has beautiful wine racks or cheese boards (a place to store all that wine)
  • BBQ master, chef Martin Laprise’s line of sauces and rubs, including Taboo BBQ with cute, saucy labels
  • Wrap your wine gifts this Christmas in one of these gorgeous, cozy wine bags made from recycled wool
  • Gift Certificates to The Rotten Grape for your wine loving pals.

It’s all about food and wine! Here’s a link to the full article: http://www.bclocalnews.com/lifestyles/112039504.html.

A case of mistaken identity

December 8, 2010

We were walking Buster one fall day a few years ago, around the corner to the end of the cul-de-sac and back.

As she was want to do in her younger days, Pepper, our cat, popped out of the bushes.

What are you doing? You never walk with us anymore.

(I’m not in the mood to walk now, just making sure you acknowledge my presence.)

Buster stops sniffing the ground and looks at me quizzically when he sees me talking to the cat. He begins to bark. WOOF! Wayne is pulling on his leash, but Buster is holding his ground. He is now facing back at me and the cat. Every pull of the leash, he moves a little bit backwards. WOOF!

Will you shut up? You’re scaring the living daylights out of the cat.

(What a blockhead, he sure is loud)

I picked up the cat and told Wayne to go on ahead, that I would bring Pepper home.

WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!

(And obnoxious.)

Wayne finally gets Buster about 30 feet in front of us and was soon within sight of our front porch.

Hey Lee?

That’s

Not

Our

Cat.

Pepper’s on the front porch.

I dropped the cat (thank you very much). And sheepishly went home.

Buster was sitting on the front porch wagging his tail and looking at Pepper.

(I see you’ve met the neighbor’s cat;  why did you think Blockhead was barking? Even he knew it wasn’t me!)

Diving at Marshes Light Marina

November 21, 2010

We’ve been enjoying beautiful sunny weather on the Outer Banks this month, and this past Friday morning was no exception. We recently moved our Marshes Light sales office over to the new ship’s store at the Marina, and I’m getting used to my new digs.  I noticed some unusual activity going on out on the docks; a couple of guys milling about with lines and hoses. One of them was wearing a strange coverall with a rubber hood and scuba mask, the other in jeans and a Nags Head sweatshirt. Our resident boater, Steve, was also nearby, overseeing the event.

Intrigued, I grabbed my camera and went outside. The coverall guy with hood was a professional diver, hired by Steve to find something boat-related that fell into the brink a while back. He was lowering himself into the water, attached to air tanks on deck by a good length of rope and hoses, and assisted by the Nags Head sweatshirt guy. He had a microphone, so he could converse with the guys on the dock as he explored the shallow depths of the marina basin. I mentioned to him to be on the lookout for vintage glass bottles as Marshes Light was a dairy farm about 100 years ago and there might be some interesing finds buried out in the muck.

After a few minutes under water, the diver found what he was looking for and brought it up. Steve was thrilled, but I was a little disappointed that he didn’t find anything more exciting. I wondered how much the diver and assistant cost, compared to the value of the casing that they retrieved.

All in all, not a typical Friday at the office; but I sure am liking our new location at the marina!

Salvaged!

There’s always movement on the Outer Banks. Foremost are the ocean and its surf. Each day brings new tides, big, ride-able waves, or small little ankle-slappers. Then there’s the wind, recently blowing in from the northeast, causing ocean over-wash in some areas and high seas.

And this past weekend, it was the Outer Banks Marathon.  Sunny skies blessed the weekend’s events, which included an 8K, 5K and Fun Run on Saturday, and the Marathon and Half Marathon on Sunday. With over 7,000 registered runners from all over the world this November, the marathon celebrated its fifth year. The two day event provides a positive economic boost to our local economy in the late fall, (see www.obsentinel.womacknewspapers.com/articles/2010/11/10).

The full marathon runners started in Kitty Hawk on the scenic Woods Road (near the Wright Memorial Bridge); and the half marathon runners started on the ByPass in Nags Head, near Milepost 11. The course takes runners through scenic Nags Head Woods and across the 35 foot tall Washington Baum Bridge to Roanoke Island, through Marshes Light and culminating in downtown Manteo.

As a first time volunteer at the Marathon, I passed out medals and congratulations at the Finish Line. It was incredibly exciting to be a small part of the event and I was humbly dumb-struck at the energy and fortitude of the participants coming across the Finish Line. They were from all over the world, all shapes and sizes, young and old, some very fit, some not so fit.  Completing the course is truly admirable!

The Outer Banks provides the perfect venue for running with plenty of opportunities to participate; check out http://outerbanksrunningclub.org for more information and calendar of events. Maybe there’s a Fun Run or 5K in my future!
