A Few of My Favorite Things: Art & Wine

January 27, 2012

There are lots of reasons to visit the Outer Banks now: it’s quiet, there are no crowds and there are lots of things to do and see. The beaches are deserted, practically guaranteeing a bounty of shells and sea glass waiting to be found.

Rather than post all the current events here, I highly recommend that you check out www.outerbanks.org. They have a great new look and it’s easy to navigate. The current calendar of events is found here. For art happenings, check out Dare County Arts Council’s stylish new website here.

Be sure to check out Sip & Dip, offered at Art Space in Southern Shores. Workshops by local artists. www.artspace.com.

Off Season usually means discounted rates and local specials.  And to me, that means  WINE. We are fortunate here to have several great wine shops with knowledgeable vintners and incredible selections.

The Wine Specialist in Kitty Hawk is located at Buccaneer‘s Walk (next to Capt’n Franks). Owned and operated by my friend Christine and her husband, Fernando  da Mota, they offer free wine tastings on Wednesday nights from 5 until 8 p.m. It’s a great way to sample new wines before purchasing. My husband especially liked the Highway 12 Cabernet Sauvignon, admiring the ripe aromas of dark berries and soft French oak nuances. I especially like the name.

We recently discovered ½ Price Night at Trio in Kitty Hawk – on Mondays, starting at 5 p.m., all wines by the glass, draft beers and wine station tab cards are 50% off. The wine station is the talk of the OBX. It’s a help-yourself automated station where you can enjoy a taste, half or full glass from a selection of high and medium priced wines. I tried a glass of the Biltmore Viogner 2010 and can heartily recommend it as a well balanced white wine with a smooth finish.

Check back again and I’ll share more on restaurants, shopping and what’s fresh at the Beach Road to Manteo.

“A Tapestry of Beauty”

January 11, 2012

There are many natural and beautiful places to explore along the Outer Banks. Certainly one of the most beautiful is on Roanoke Island, The Elizabethan Gardens.

“ Built as a living memorial to Sir Walter Raleigh’s lost colonists, The Gardens include a collection of Renaissance statues and Elizabethan-style buildings that let you imagine you are back in the time of Queen Elizabeth I. Spring-time tulips lead to an ever changing palette of year-round color from hydrangeas, native plants, perennials and camellias. Enjoy the colorful crepe myrtles in the Sunken Garden or the view from a sound-side 16th-century style gazebo.”

Battered by storms and rebuilt many times throughout its seventy-year life, Jennette’s was knocked down by Hurricane Isabel in 2003, just after the pier and its five-acre tract were purchased by the NC Aquarium Society. Now, after years of planning and twenty-four months of construction, Jennette’s will reemerge in 2011 as a one-of-a-kind educational ocean pier. The Aquarium-operated complex will feature educational classrooms and programs, alternative energy demonstrations, live animal exhibits, meeting facilities, a snack bar and tackle shop, and a host of other displays and features for good family fun….with great fishing too! Coors Cottage Transformed to Discover Marshes Light Get-Away

    April 14, 2011

We’re in the process of outfitting our beloved Coors Cottage to be our new guest accommodations for Marshes Light. Previously, our guests enjoyed staying at the Marina Villas, in a three bedroom condominium. As a matter of fact, the last guests who stayed there, fell in love and immediately purchased it – hence the move.

Check out these adorable dishes that Mrs. C found in Hilton Head. They’ll work well with the white dishes and mugs I found at a local store.

The Coors Cottage will bring a new dimension to a visit at Marshes Light. A 2009 Parade of Homes winner, the Coors Cottage blends historical detail and craftsmanship of the past with an upscale, gourmet kitchen and an open and inviting floor plan.

How about a soak in the tub after a full day?

Located on stately Fernando Street, the Coors Cottage is just a short walk to downtown Manteo and quaint shops, restaurants, and Festival Park.

    Imagine

    March 9, 2011

Could you imagine yourself living here? How about waking up each morning with the sun rising over the Atlantic Ocean nearby? Perhaps, after a cup of coffee and a bite to eat, you put your kayak in the water and paddle around Festival Park, maybe take a fishing rod, but most definitely a camera. That might be the most you do in a day, or maybe you would meet some friends for lunch at a local restaurant that’s just a short walk away via the sound-side boardwalk. If your days are leisurely, perhaps you’d want to take a pottery class next door at the college.

Could you imagine yourself boating here and mooring up for a week? Staying in a destination marina and exploring a charming historic town on foot. There’s a history center, mariner’s museum, outdoor theater, summer farmer’s market and “First Friday” street festivals. There are plenty of locally owned restaurants serving fresh food and fresh caught seafood daily. Maybe rent bicycles or don your running shoes and hit the miles-long bike and jogging path that run the length of the island.

    Imagine.

    Washed Ashore

    March 2, 2011

The high winds yesterday pushed this little boat up under the Marshes Light Marina. With a little help from our dock boys, we got it repositioned on dry land. If it’s not claimed, it just might be salvaged and used to putter about the Sound.

    Winter Wednesdays & Wine

    February 24, 2011

This is a percolating time of year along the Outer Banks; it’s not coffee yet, but it’s brewing. We are on the threshold of Spring and up and down the beach businesses are getting ready for the season. It’s also a great time of year to enjoy specials hosted by local shops, such as the wine tasting I visited last night at The Wine Specialist  (Milepost 4.5 on the Bypass in Kitty Hawk).

Wine specialist Stacey Walters of Tryon Distributing, showcased wines from La Posta Vineyards in Argentina. We enjoyed sampling a white wine, Blanco de Blancos, 2009, which was a blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Torrontes. It was crisp and light and will be delicious on a warm summer evening. I also tried a smooth Malbec, 2008, a dark ruby colored wine that is full bodied, balanced, and very fruit forward which I purchased (about $15.00). A reviewer of Malbec wines from the New York Times states: “They were consistent, generally unchallenging and crowd-pleasing. In short, what’s not to like?”

    The Other Manteo

    December 17, 2010

I use a couple of search engines and apps to find information to share with you in this blog including WhosTalking.com and several Google alerts (Outer_Banks, Roanoke_Island, Manteo) that send posts with those names mentioned to my In Box.

Which led me to an article in BClocalnews.com. Written by Jennifer Schell for the Kelowna Capital News, the article lists her “Favourite Things to Share this Holiday Season,” and in which I discovered the other Manteo, a resort in Canada. Kelowna is located in the middle of British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley and lays approximately midway between Vancouver and Calgary. Pretty far from Outer Bank’s Manteo.

Let’s see what Kelownan’s want under their Christmas tree:

    • Homemade crackers at Discover Wines or Okanagan Grocery
    • A gift certificate to Wine Plus+ Wine School
    • A Thermomix. Just rated the No. 1 foodie gift on the Food Network
    • Sea to Sky Seasoning, mini flavoured salts, tins of luscious Fanny Bay Smoked Oysters, smoked salmon, Maldon Sea Salt from Codfather’s Seafood Market
    • Monika’s coveted Christmas cookie boxes at Okanagan Grocery
    • Moni’s Nuttier Than A Fruitcakes
    • Wine
    • Cheese, Carmelis Goat Cheese and Gort’s Gouda
    • Jars of grilled artichokes, olives and other Italian delights.
    • Simply the freshest, best olive oil (and red wine vinegar) from the Olive Oil Merchant—online store offers fast, free delivery in Kelowna (free delivery for olive oil? Wow!)
    • Beautiful chocolates and chocolate bars from Sandrine Pastry & Chocolate and great Christmas breakfast Ideas and quiche
    • Chef Rod Butters of Raudz Regional Table now has his personal line of preserves for sale. Drunken Cherries, homemade pickles and more
    • Chef Bernard’s, Wild Apple Restaurant at Manteo, Blackberry Basil Jam or Star Anise Marinade for your gift basket
    • Summerhill has the perfect bubbles (including the Cipes Gabriel that won Best International Sparkling wine recently) and decadent Icewine chocolates
    • Broken Barrel Furniture Company has beautiful wine racks or cheese boards (a place to store all that wine)
    • BBQ master, chef Martin Laprise’s line of sauces and rubs, including Taboo BBQ with cute, saucy labels
    • Wrap your wine gifts this Christmas in one of these gorgeous, cozy wine bags made from recycled wool
    • Gift Certificates to The Rotten Grape for your wine loving pals.

It’s all about food and wine! Here’s a link to the full article: http://www.bclocalnews.com/lifestyles/112039504.html.

    Back to School

    August 26, 2010

Schools in Dare County (Outer Banks) started back yesterday. It was during a conversation at Knuckle-Up that, for the first time,  I couldn’t join in on, as my youngest son graduated from First Flight High last June and started school at College of the Albemarle, the community college here on Monday. I’ve had boys in Dare County schools since 1986 and, well, that’s 24 years! Where did the time go? What happened to my youth?

College of the Albemarle is a great school with great vision. And, even better, they are not looking to me for lunch money or permission slips,  nor do they need me to volunteer or make cupcakes.  No after school care or athletics to arrange, no guidance counselors to meet. No controversies to attend to, like the time when the youngest was in second grade, riding home on the bus, exhausted. Some little punk sat behind him kicking the seat, bump, bump, bumping my youngest in the back of his aching head. He did ask once to stop, which only encouraged the little devil behind him to kick even more. My youngest finally had had enough, and turned around and told the beast that he was going to get his BB gun and shoot him dead if he didn’t stop. Well, the little beast did stop and as soon as he got off the bus, told his mother about it, who called the school’s principal, who called me in for a meeting.

In spite of similar shenanigans (after all I am the mother of three boys), I’m happy to report that my experience with Dare County Schools has been very positive. With dedicated teachers and staff, parents who are involved,  a variety of programs, the welfare of the children is most important.  Dare County Schools earned high recognition in state testing, and Dare’s on-time graduation rate is best in state (second year in a row). Featuring Artist Heidi Martin Kuster

    August 14, 2010

In Manteo, you meet all sorts of interesting people. Its seaside setting attracts people who love the water; its cultural setting appeals to people who love theater and music; its historic setting brings people who appreciate heritage and architecture. All of these elements together attract the artist.

This week we had the pleasure of meeting artist Heidi Martin Kuster and her family. She and her husband, Jeff, were in town enjoying the New World Festival of the Arts, while their sons, Sam and William, participated in the Roanoke Island Sailing School.

Heidi finds her inspiration in the land, in the geological passage of time, in rocks, in rivers. She said, “Each rock I pick up holds evidence of our constantly transitioning planet. The idea that I can access traces of life from millions of years ago, buy simply examining a pebble is thrilling and humbling. These ancient marks are the foundation of my compositions.”

Heidi shared a work in progress, three pieces on hand-made paper using a wash process of the ripples of water on a lake. Organic. Colorful. Soothing.

Heidi and family live in Paris for part of the year. Her work is displayed in galleries in Chicago, Barcelona and Paris. They spent their summer on the Outer Banks.  Visit www.heidimartinkuster.com.
