Time for Lunch

When there’s a special occassion, or I’m just plain sick and tired of leftovers or frozen microwavable meals, there are some great local eateries to choose from in Manteo.

One of my all time favorite places in Poor Richard’s on the waterfront in downtown Manteo. The place is casual, the views are great and the food is fresh. Order at the counter and find a seat inside or out. If it’s not listed on the menu, chances are they can make it for you. http://www.poorrichardsmanteo.com/. 252-473-3333.

We recently tried the new Harbor Point Bar and Grill  at Shallowbag Bay. This is a new restaurant that took over the space once occupied by Striper’s. The view was outstanding and the food delicious. I enjoyed a turkey/bacon wrap with fresh home-made chips and salsa. 252-473-3222.

Another favorite place is Ortegaz Southwestern Grill and Wine Bar. The service is always great, and the food is served with a fresh spin and a nod to the flavors of the southwest. Their fish tacos are delightful. http://www.ortegaz.com/index.html.

23rd Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Today (Sunday, March 20) at 1 p.m. on The Beach Road in Nags Head is the 23rd Annual Kelly’s St. Patrick’s Parade. The parade route starts at about the 10.5 Milepost.  The Theme for 2011 is Celebration of Anniversaries:  Town of Nags Head, 50th Anniversary and Soaring 100-Centennial Celebration of Orville Wright’s 1911 Glider Flight of 9 minutes 45 seconds -a record that stood for just under 10 years, and, of course, my 30th wedding anniversary (don’t think the parade organizers know about that one).

I’m looking forward to seeing the lovely ladies of Counter Culture Garden Club, the SPCA’s march with their canine companions, classic cars and more.

OUTER BANKS TASTE OF THE BEACH

Starting on Friday, March 17 and ending on Sunday with the OBX Grand Tasting. Tickets are selling out fast  for some of the events; you can order tickets and keep up to date by visiting http://www.obxtasteofthebeach.com/home.htm.

If ticket sales are any indication, holding the event in March isn’t a problem. Sproul (Ben Sproul, president of the Outer Banks Restaurant Association) pegged ticket sales in 2010 at $73,000; as of today, sales are $90,000, and tickets are still available for many events . . . a 20 percent increase in what can only be described as a struggling economy.

 The 2011 Taste of the Beach features 50 events from over 35 restaurants and vendors. Events cover the culinary map, including prices and offerings to suit a variety of tastes. From a gourmet St. Patrick’s Day dinner at Ocean Boulevard Bistro (bangers and mash, fish and chips featuring red drum) on March 17, to Corned Beef and Car Bombs at Lucky 12, attendees can sample a variety of offerings at local establishments.

Could you imagine yourself living here? How about waking up each morning with the sun rising over the Atlantic Ocean nearby? Perhaps, after a cup of coffee and a bite to eat, you put your kayak in the water and paddle around Festival Park, maybe take a fishing rod, but most definitely a camera. That might be the most you do in a day, or maybe you would meet some friends for lunch at a local restaurant that’s just a short walk away via the sound-side boardwalk. If your days are leisurely, perhaps you’d want to take a pottery class next door at the college.

Could you imagine yourself boating here and mooring up for a week? Staying in a destination marina and exploring a charming historic town on foot. There’s a history center, mariner’s museum, outdoor theater, summer farmer’s market and “First Friday” street festivals. There are plenty of locally owned restaurants serving fresh food and fresh caught seafood daily. Maybe rent bicycles or don your running shoes and hit the miles-long bike and jogging path that run the length of the island.

Washed Ashore

The high winds yesterday pushed this little boat up under the Marshes Light Marina. With a little help from our dock boys, we got it repositioned on dry land. If it’s not claimed, it just might be salvaged and used to putter about the Sound.
