Marshes Light is a new home marina community located in the heart of Manteo, North Carolina.

Manteo is located on Roanoke Island, surrounded by the waters of the Roanoke Sound, and just west of Nags Head on the Outer Banks.

From almost anywhere in Marshes Light, it is only a five minute walk along a scenic waterfront boardwalk to downtown Manteo, with fine-dining restaurants and casual eateries, bookstores, shops and galleries.

A little further along the boardwalk and over a wooden bridge is Roanoke Island Festival Park with an outdoor auditorium hosting concerts (in season), a maritime museum, and a replica of Sir Walter Raleigh’s brigantine that brought 110 British colonists to the Outer Banks in 1587. Manteo hosts First Friday Festivals and summertime Farmers Markets.

Marshes Light has a selection of home sites and condominiums for sale. There’s also a marina offering boat slips for sale or lease, slips will accommodate boats up to 60’ in length. While the Marina does not yet have fuel, there is power, water, pump-out service and restrooms and laundry facilities for boaters.

BNE Land & Development

In 1985 Kitty Hawk Land Company was purchased by BNE Land & Development, a subsidiary of Boddie-Noell Enterprises of Rocky Mount, NC. At the time, Kitty Hawk Land Company was the prominent land developer of the Outer Banks, creating enviable communities such as Southern Shores, SeaPines and WatersEdge.

Kitty Hawk Land Company with the backing of Boddie-Noell went on to develop The Currituck Club on the northern Outer Banks, Arlington Place in southeastern NC, Viniterra in New Kent, VA, and Marshes Light in Manteo.

The Rock Fish are Running!

A 63 pound striped bass (aka rock fish) was landed recently by a father and son team fishing aboard the Rigged Up out of Oregon Inlet Fishing Center on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Congratulations to Captain Haywood on and his fishing party.

The largest striped bass ever caught by angling was a 35.6 kg (78.5 lb) specimen taken in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on September 21, 1982. The record-holder is Albert McReynolds, who fought the fish from the beach for an hour and twenty-minutes before landing it in the surf.

While the Atlantic striped bass is the state fish of Maryland, Rhode Island and South Carolina, it’s easily the fish of choice during the winter on the Outer Banks.

Also known as rock fish, or ocean rock, these fish migrate between fresh and salt water; and its during the colder months when the rockfish show up along the Outer Banks that makes prime fishing time.

Ocean rockfish is definitely the best fish I’ve ever tasted. If you’re planning a trip to the Outer Banks soon, check in with any of the local fish stores, such as Carawan’s in Kitty Hawk, and ask if they have fresh ocean rockfish or striped bass. Get them to filet one for you, take it home, rub it with olive oil, salt and pepper and grill about 5-7 minutes on each side. If unable to grill outdoors, fish can be broiled 4-5 minutes from heat, turning once, 10 to 12 minutes total.
